Your body has a built-in mechanism to monitor your blood glucose levels, but when this mechanism stop working properly, it means your body has become less sensitive to the effects of insulin and has to work harder to control blood glucose levels. This condition is called impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).
People who are extremely overweight or obese are at higher risk of developing IGT, especially people who carry most of the extra weight around their middle. Extra weight around the middle affects the way insulin works. People with IGT have high blood
glucose levels, and the objective is to lower those numbers.
Since people with IGT often do not experience any symptoms, they don't know that they have it until it develops into something more serious, such as diabetes. So it is important to pay attention to symptoms of diabetes if you are overweight and get your blood glucose levels checked regularly.
You can also do something about it by getting physically active and eating a healthier diet to reduce and control your blood glucose levels. Try to replace sugar-heavy foods with sugar-free foods, drink less alcohol, and limit
fried and fatty meals.
